Kinja'd!!!

Installed more than two weeks ago, just now getting around to taking/posting some pictures.

Kinja'd!!!

17 x 8 Konig Oversteer, 225/45R17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3, for those who are curious.

Kinja'd!!!

All photos taken with my NEX-5R with adapted Canon FD lenses. First two with a 50mm f1.8 (probably at f2.8-f4.0 or so), the third with a 35-105 f3.5 (probably at 35mm and wide open).

Looking sharp! Any progress on the GTI brakes plan?

Looking good. Konigs are one of my favorite “affordable” wheel brands.

Not really, no. Not sure if I want to do it this year, as it would necessitate new winter wheels. I could do other things (exhaust, tune, swaybars are options I’m considering) or I could throw money at the e30, which would be a more fun autocross car. All in good time though, no rush.

Understandable. Of those things, the tune will probably have the biggest impact (the EA888 has serious headroom), but comes with its own set of drawbacks, especially warranty. To be honest, I don’t think there’s a bad choice in that list.

The biggest drawback on the tune for me is the clutch. It won’t stand up to much more than stock power/torque in the long term. (The same is true for the GTI actually.) I’m considering the Burger Motorsport JB1 and Neuspeed Power Module; they offer a smaller bump in performance but are undetectable by VW once removed so it shouldn’t present any warranty issues and should preserve the clutch, for a bit longer anyway.

I was considering a set of these in 19x8.5" and 19x9.5" for my 335xi, ended up with choosing something else because I was trying to go as light weight as possible for the 19s. Not so much of an issue with the 17s.

BTW if you want a fun FD mount lens, check out the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4. There were several versions of Series 1 70-210 over the years but Version 3 was the best. More info here .

Forgot to consider that, as we’ve got the DSG, which is quite resilient. Those are piggyback modules, right? On the UK GTI forum there’s lots of positive talk about the DTUK one, but I don’t know whether you can get one of those over there?

Thanks for the lens info. I’m looking to add a longer zoom or prime to the lineup so if I come across one of these I’ll be sure to check it out.

Yup, piggyback boxes that go between a couple of sensors and the ECU to fool it into allowing more boost and the fuel to go with it. Doesn’t look like DTUK makes anything for the 1.8TSI I’ve got as it’s not sold in a Golf over there (it is in the Polo GTI though). The Neuspeed one is well regarded here and Burger Motorsport has a good reputation as well, though moreso in the BMW world.

Oh lookie here are some FD mount v.3:

Vivitar Series I 70-210mm F2.8-4.0 Komine Macro Zoom Lens for Canon Manual SLR - $119.00 + $13.45 s&h = $132.45

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 VMC Canon FD Manual Focus macro lens - $119.99 + $9.99 s&h = $129.98

Vivitar Series 1 VMC F/2.8~4 70-210mm Macro Zoom Canon FD Mt A1 AE1 P T70 Excell - $95.00 + $12.00 s&h = $107.00

V.4 & 5 are also f/2.8-4 but not very good, you want to avoid these. The easiest way to tell aside from the serial # (v. 4 & 5 were made by Cosina and serial # starts with 09) is v. 3 has a knurled grip on the zoom/focus ring and v. 4 & 5 have a rubber “Vivitar Series 1” grip.

If you’re looking for an FD mount prime, Canon made a few different FD 135mm & 200mm lenses. I think 200mm by itself on 1.6x crop mirrorless is a bit long.

The FDn 135mm f/2.8 is pretty solid and relatively small. Review on full-frame NEX here . There’s an older FD 135mm f/2.5 S.C. but it’s a lot heavier.

Another interesting Komine-made Vivitar lens is the 135mm f/2.8 close focusing. There were similar 55mm and 90mm lenses in this series. I had the 55 in Pentax K-mount when I had Pentax DSLRs. This is the only FD mount example I could find.

There was also a “regular” Komine-made Vivitar 135/2.8 but that one has a 55mm filter thread instead of 62mm on the close focusing one, and doesn’t say “CLOSE FOCUSING” on the end.

Down the rabbit hole of old manual lenses I go...
